Tips for Hotel Etiquette - Novtej Dhillon
Hotel is a place which is so much more than just
dining and sleeping. Staying in a hotel can be a fun experience taking into
consideration the ambience of the hotel. If you are one of those travelling freaks,
then with every hotel stay there would be certain expectations laid out. Apart
from good food, comfortable sleep there are other basic amenities which one
makes a note of including the hotel staff. The hotel does its best in most
cases to handle even the finicky customers however as a guest it is our duty as
well to brush up on our behaving skills so that it does not pose a problem to
others.
To make the stay or dining experience a more
memorable and luxurious one, there are certain etiquettes which everyone should
make a note of:
Reservations:
Whether it is a one-day trip or couple of days, it
is always best to book the hotel rooms well in advance to avoid any last minute
running around from one hotel to another. Since last minute there can be
chances the hotels can be overbooked, especially the ones which were looking
for. Print a copy of the confirmation and also give a call to the hotel desk
for re-confirming the reservations done. This can be done one day in advance.
Also let the hotel desk or the receptionist know if you are carrying along a
pet since not all hotels are flexible enough to allow pets inside. The policies
vary from hotel to hotel, keeping in mind the guest in general.
Day of Arrival:
Once you are arrived at the
hotel, you can check with the receptionist about the confirmation information
and provide the details of all those who have accompanied with you and which
rooms would be occupied by which member so that the hotel desk can keep a tab
of them. Throughout the hotel stay try to do a bit of tipping, you can tip the
person at the parking valet for dropping off and getting your vehicle, the
porter who gets the bags till the room, concierge fellow at the end of the
hotel stay, the cleaning staff for timely cleaning the room and ensuring all the
items are available in the room.

While in the room:
Do not do the mistake that
since the hotel room is not your own property, it is fine to not take care of
it. Treat the room, the items made available by the hotel as well as the hotel
premises as your own property. By doing so, one would tend to maintain the
place clean. Take care of the furniture’s and fixtures, even if they are not
your personal belongings the hotel has an expectation that you would take care
of it. If mistakenly something breaks or does not work properly, inform the
helpdesk immediately. While in the room, ensure not to disturb the other guests
by increasing the volume of the television or music system. Try not to disturb
anyone. If you feel someone is making a lot of noise and causing nuisance,
inform the hotel staff so that they can handle them in their way. Do not
confront the guests by yourself. Also avoid taking any hotel property such as
towels, bathrobes, glasses, coffee mugs, lotions. These should be only used
during your hotel stay.
Staff & Hotel Facilities:
Always
follow the rule of smiling and saying “please” or “Thank You” towards the
staff. Be respectful to the staff in the hotel. Remember if you are good to
them, the same would be reciprocated by them. Avoid any personal discussions
with the hotel staff. When there are any housekeeping personnel around, you can
wait outside until they finish the work or ask them to come later. Try and not
keep the room dirty which would increase their work as well. Keep all the dirty
clothing in a pile on a separate spot of the room. Dispose all trash at one
place instead of keeping it around here and there. While you are in the hotel
premises ensure that you maintain a low tone so as to not disturb the other
guests around. While in the elevator do not allow the children to play around
with the lift buttons. Any common areas of the hotel, such as swimming pool,
workout rooms, garden areas should be maintained well. Read the instructions of these common areas.
If you have kids along with you, always supervise them so that they do not
injure themselves.
During checkout:
Ensure that you checkout in
the given time so that it allows the housekeeping staff to do their work of
cleaning. Also it would not look good to keep the other guests waiting if the
room has been booked for another stay. Before the checkout ensure that all the
switches are turned off. At the hotel desk, ensure to re-check the bill which
has been provided so that accurate information is only provided. Provide the
key to the hotel desk, as per their rules else you can leave it in the room
itself which the housekeeping staff can collect later.
